Advertised Summary Job Description: Reporting to the Vice President for Budget & Financial Planning, the Assistant Vice President (AVP) helps the Vice President to oversee the University's $3.0 billion annual operating budget, including all aspects of the planning and monitoring. The AVP is responsible for the analysis and review of the operating budgets for Columbia's seventeen schools, the independent academic centers and institutes, and the University's administrative budget.

As a senior administrator within the Budget Office, the AVP is expected to work closely with the Vice President to manage, coach and develop the team, and is responsible for four direct reports: the Manager for Administrative Budgets, the Manager for Special Projects, and two financial analysts.

The AVP is expected to forge strong relationships with the senior business officers at each school at the University. The AVP will partner with key members of the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) to ensure that the CUMC budget submission is timely and reasonable. In addition, he/she will manage the administrative budget of the University which requires working closely with other members of the Budget Office team as well as senior administrators around the University. The AVP is responsible for evaluating budget and quarterly monitoring submissions for reasonableness when compared to actual accounting information, and for consistency with past budget plans; he/she is also responsible for improving all aspects of the monitoring and budget process throughout the University.

Working closely with the Vice President and the Director for Management Reporting & Project Management, the AVP will help assemble documents and presentations for the Board of Trustees. The AVP will perform other related duties and special projects, as assigned.

General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree, preferably in accounting or finance related field, required. At least ten years of progressively comprehensive analytical, budget and financial planning responsibility in a large, complex, decentralized organization required. Managerial experience required.

Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Outstanding financial analysis and modeling skills required, including variance analysis, financial statement analysis, and statistics. Strong computer proficiency (Word and Excel), including an in-depth knowledge of spreadsheet packages is required. Familiarity with database design is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail, plus the ability to work closely and effectively with a diverse group of senior University administrators, essential. The successful candidate must be a strategic thinker, with an open and collaborative style of leadership that encourages teamwork and cooperation, and a strong role model, manager and coach. Must have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.

Preferred Qualifications: MBA or comparable advanced degree strongly preferred. Experience in higher education preferred.
