Summary Description: The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, Mailman School of Public Health invites qualified candidates for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position. Prospective candidates must have interests and expertise in the area of health services, health systems, or health care management/administration. The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health is a vibrant department of faculty from a variety of professional backgrounds whose work focuses on domestic and global issues related to sexual/reproductive, adolescent, child and refugee health, and health systems. Faculty in this largely grant-funded department engages in a unique combination of multi-disciplinary research, teaching and service activities. The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, together with partner agencies, has developed partnerships with the governments of Tanzania and Ghana, that involve health systems research and action. The core scientific resource of each project will be strategies and approaches for health systems strengthening and sustainability, and effective and efficient delivery of health services. Research operations will involve implementing a system for continuous observation, monitoring, and evaluation that will utilize demographic surveillance technology with health systems information modules. The successful candidate will participate in the implementation of project activities, and contribute to the evaluation of impact of health systems and program interventions on population health. The projects will develop systems for evidence-based strategic planning, system trial, and scaling up of proven health service approaches. The Assistant Professor will provide support for the research system development process, train local staff in health systems research, and collaborate with Mailman School faculty and other external partners on epidemiological and health research and leadership training. At the Mailman School, responsibilities will include teaching in health systems, health services, and organizational restructuring and management. The Assistant Professor will undertake the following activities: 1. Provide technical support to scientists on the design and execution of health research tools and procedures. 2. Provide scientific leadership for the design of intervention studies for improving the quality and accessibility of preventive and curative primary health care services with lead partners from agencies in Ghana, and Tanzania. 3. Assist Mailman School faculty with collaborative research and capacity building activities in Tanzania and Ghana. 4. Lead research on the social and behavioral determinants of health and survival. 5. Lead research based on longitudinal demographic surveillance data. 6. Mentor collaborating faculty, scientific staff, and students through research partnerships, workshops, and other activities that build capacity for state health authorities to develop and use evidence to guide policy and action. 7. Mentor Mailman School masters degree practicum students and post-doctoral fellows assigned to collaborative projects in Africa. 8. Collaborate with faculty at the Mailman School of Public Health, the University of Ghana, and the Ifakara Health Institute who are developing joint teaching and learning systems for the health sciences. 9. Assist the Mailman School and its collaborating partners in reporting to donors on project progress. 10. Provide support and leadership for dissemination activities. 11. Collaborate with the Columbia Population Research Center on demographic research and teaching. The incumbent must be willing to reside in Tanzania and travel extensively to Ghana.
Minimum Qualifications: The Assistant Professor must possess the following qualifications: 1. PhD in public health, health services research, epidemiology, economics, or statistics. 2. Advanced quantitative research skills in health, statistics, or population sciences. 3. Dissertation, publications, or reports in English that focus on longitudinal health research. 4. Work experience in Africa. 5. Willingness to work and live in Tanzania and travel extensively to Ghana. 6. Experience with demographic or health survey research in Africa preferred
