The New School
Position Responsibilities: The New School, the renowned, progressive university in New York City, seeks an entrepreneurial and experienced Dean, Online Learning to oversee and administer online learning courses university-wide, ensuring development and execution of online learning opportunities consistent with the academic strategy and priorities of the University. Working in collaboration with the Provost and other Deans, the Online Learning Dean will promote academic excellence in the development and delivery of online learning courses and initiatives while furthering the expansion of the New School's online educational constituency. The New School's online and on-campus degree programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The New School, a privately supported institution, is chartered as a university by the Regents of the State of New York and its credits and degrees are recognized and accepted by other accredited colleges, universities and professional schools throughout the United States and around the world. The New School seeks an experienced distance-learning leader with a depth and breadth of experience and acumen to expand online program offerings and participants. He or she must be a proven leader with the demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse community of senior administrators and faculty in order to achieve the University's academic goals. The successful candidate will be expected to lead considerable structural and programmatic change. The Dean, Online Learning must possess an entrepreneurial spirit and the necessary skills to conceptualize, problem-solve, build consensus and execute new programs effectively and expeditiously. The Dean, Online Learning will be a strategic ally to New School's executive and academic leadership, its faculty and students and will also be a visible leader among New School's growing online educational community of learners and alumni. As Dean the appointee will have responsibility for providing academic and administrative leadership to the Online Learning community at the New School. Over the last two years, The New School has made the development of new University-wide academic programs a priority. Recently, a new University-wide program in Environmental Studies has been launched and planning is underway to launch new University-wide majors and minors in such diverse areas as International Studies, Urban Studies, Design and Society, and Media Studies, among others. As the senior official reporting to Provost and working closely with the President, and Deans and Officers of the University, the Dean, Online Learning will participate in the development and execution of the academic priorities of the University, while managing a broad portfolio and lending senior administrative expertise to developing online curriculum planning, as it relates to the future organization of the University. The Provost and the Dean, Online Learning will develop a University-wide approach to integrating Professional and Continuing Education and online education into the regular curricula development work of the University. The Dean, Online Learning will, at the discretion of the Provost, work closely with the President, Other Deans and Officers of the University in developing and executing online programming consistent with the academic strategy and priorities of the University. The Dean, Online Learning will collaborate as needed with the General Counsel with regard to protecting New School intellectual property and will work effectively with a diverse community of senior administrators and faculty in order to achieve the University's ambitious academic goals.

Minimum Qualifications: The New School seeks an experienced distance-learning leader with the proven ability and the demonstrated track record to respond effectively to the key responsibilities and challenges noted above. The successful candidate will possess the following experience, qualities and professional attributes: -Possess knowledge and experience in online learning, curriculum and program development within a sophisticated and complex institution of higher education -Proven ability to work effectively with a diverse community of senior executive and academic administrators and faculty in order to achieve the New School's ambitious academic goals -Stature, vision, intellectual agility and professional integrity to gain the trust and confidence of the President, Provost, Deans, Officers, Faculty, students and staff throughout the University -Ability to provide quality improvement, innovation, and excellent service to the University community -Ability to recruit, lead and facilitate groups of individuals, without the framework of an accountability or reporting relationship, to implement considerable structural and programmatic change -Proven entrepreneurial experience, or deep experience in an entrepreneurial environment, and ambition to grow the online learning enterprise, both as an intellectual community and as a revenue-generating business in support of the New School's overall research, teaching and service mission -Strong inclusive leadership style, management, analytical and problem solving skills, with demonstrated comfort with shared and personal accountability Experience in research and assessment of educational pedagogy, especially as it relates to online learning environments -Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) and relationship management skills: a proven philanthropic development / fund-raising background is highly desirable -Outstanding organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in resource scarce, fast-paced environment while managing competing demands and multiple tasks within an environment of diverse and occasionally competing stakeholders -Highly motivated self-starter; collaborative and collegial; selflessness, sense of humor with wisdom and perspective -Proven record of senior-level successful executive experience in higher education -An advanced degree is preferred

Preferred Qualifications: As a member of the academic administration, the Dean, Online Education will further advance the academic mission of The New School. Key responsibilities and challenges include: -Establish strong relationships and foster open lines of communication with the diverse constituents within the New School including the President, Deans, Officers of the University, faculty, staff, and both traditional and non-traditional students -Play a key and critical role in the development and execution of the online courses, and programs consistent with the academic strategy and priorities of the University -Manage a broad portfolio of administrative responsibilities and lend administrative expertise to create University-wide approaches to developing, implementing and integrating online course content and programs consistent with current and planned curriculum -Direct University-wide administrative planning for all online learning and provide counsel to the Provost regarding the role of online learning in the New School's continuing and professional education enterprise -Contribute broadly to the development and implementation of new University-wide academic programs, particularly in identifying opportunities to develop online courses, initiatives and offerings -Recruit and coordinate faculty participation in online course and program development and work with the appropriate university officers on the development of business and marketing plans to facilitate the introduction and integration of on-line components with respect to existing and new academic programs -Evaluate online academic courses and provide leadership and direction for the development and enhancement of online courses or new offerings for young adult and adult learners within the New School community, generating demand for online courses from a much wider audience -Maintain an environment that is conducive both to learning for students and efficient and professional for the staff and faculty engaged in the New School's online learning community -Administer policies and procedures of the University as they relate to online students, faculty and other instructors -Manage resources for the online learning program, develop, implement and monitor a balanced annual operating budget -Design, implement and manage assessment plans for the online learning administrative staff -Develop and advance extended campus opportunities through online learning initiatives including international initiatives -Manage the development program for the online learning program, including cultivating and soliciting new donors and stewarding and expanding current donor participation
